Right now I'm working on a comic project on the 2018 iPad and in procreate at 3541x5016 I only get 7 layers. I was wondering what you iPad Pro owners (of various versions) are getting at that size? Trying to wiggle around that layer limit is a bit painful but I'm loving the new watercolor maxpack brushes like crazy and really want to do this project with them. Been wondering if getting an older pro would be worth pausing the project and doing a commission spree.

This is precisely why I hate Procreate so much.......how such a woefully limiting program became so ungodly popular infuriates me.

For your purposes.....I have the 2019 iPad Mini 5....which has a slim 3GB of ram..with that same canvas size......my max layer limit is a pathetic 11.

Given how the current iPad Pros (much less older ones) only have 4GB of Ram (except for the literally highest end model which has 6GB).......I somehow doubt Procreate will ever be suitable for you as long as it imposes such unnecessarily low limits. I mean a 4GB or Ram iPad Pro will prob give you more layers then my Mini.....but not really enough layers to warrant an outright new purchase.

I know you love that brush back....but you would be better off switching to Clip Studio Paint or MediBang Paint......both offer more Desktop level of functionality......they have layer groups......and both programs don't limit your layers. In both cases.....you can really add layers till the app becomes unresponsive.....but I've thrown 100+ layer Clip Studio Files from my Windows tablets onto the iPad And worked on it with no issue.

I'm using Clip for the actual pages with text and bubbles, and doing just the art in procreate. Seven is not enough since there's paper/background, rough pencils, clean pencils, inks, which only leaves two for color and a single for refs... I can make it work but it's a bit painful and would kill for just 2-3 more, just not sure if it's worth the massive cost of upgrading to a newer or older pro (or even how many the pro would give me) since I would need to bust my tail on commissions to afford it.

Been using clip for years but haven't been able to find any watercolor brushes that get close to what I've been pulling out with procreate without frustratingly tweaking brushes all the time.

Could you work smaller? Procreate bases the layer limit proportional to canvas size....if you were to work on a smaller canvas that should buy you a few extra layers. However....I would advise against getting a newer iPad Pro at this time.......the current Pros are at the 3rd generation which came out in November 2018......very very likely Apple will update them within the next 6 months......if anything I'm hoping for a RAM upgrade......like if the 4th Gen Ipad Pros all jumped to 6-8GB......given the current limits of Procreate......such an update would benefit it greatly. (Of course Apple could just maintain 4GB for another generation..... :( )
