Snapchat lenses are a great way to add a twist to your story or streak messages. If you want a more customized augmented reality experience, you can design your own lens and share your creation using the free app Lens Studio. In this article, we'll teach you how to create a Snapchat lens for free using Lens Studio on a computer.

Steps

  1. 1

Download Lens Studio on your computer. Lens Studio is available for free download on Mac and PC devices. Go to Lens Studio and click "Download Now." Once you've read and agreed to the terms and conditions, click "Download for Mac" or "Download for PC" depending on which device you're using.

  2. 2

Start with a template to design your lens. If you don't feel ready to build a lens from scratch, templates are a great tool because they provide the basic elements for you. When you open Lens Studio, the first thing you'll see in the homepage is a set of recommended templates.

    • From there, click "All Templates >" to browse all the available templates. You can filter them by category and difficulty level to find one that matches your preferences.
    • If you're already familiar with augmented reality-building or want more of a challenge, click "+ New Project" to begin working in a blank template.

Customize your lens. Now you'll find yourself on the studio page, which is made up of different panels. In the Objects panel at the top left, click the "+" to add objects or interactions to your lens. These can include face distortions, images, text, or color correction. If you change your mind, you can disable an object by unchecking the box next to it.[1]

    • Use the inspector panel, the second box to the right, to edit elements of an object.
    • The preview panel, the farthest box to the right, allows you to see what your lens would look like without having to open Snapchat.
  4. 4

Prepare your lens for publishing. Before you submit your lens, name it and make sure it meets the right criteria so it doesn't get rejected for publishing.

    • Above the objects panel, check the lens size to make sure it's less than 8 MB.
    • To name your lens, click "Project Info," enter your chosen name, then click "Apply."
  5. 5

Submit your lens. Now your lens is ready for publishing. At the top left of your screen, click "Publish Lens." Lens Studio will redirect you to a web browser to enter your Snapchat login information. Once you do, the program will upload your lens and automatically open another web browser. There, click "Submit Lens" and fill out the fields to your preference.

    • Adding tags to your lens is a great way to increase its visibility. For example, if you make a skiing themed lens and add a more general tag, like "winter," your lens will appear when users search that term.
    • You also have the option to add a preview of your lens. Just click "Add Lens Preview" then upload an image or video of your lens with a 9:16 aspect ratio.
    • When you're finished, click "Submit Lens." Your lens will be sent to review, and you should be notified about its approval within a few minutes.
